More than a million people gathered for prayer near the emir's palace, led by the emir himself, who arrived on foot. Our group watched from the top of the clay wall of the old city at Kofar Mata (Women's Gate), above the dye pits where Bill later apprenticed.
We were surrounded by curious (and beautiful) children dressed in their festival best.
The time of prayer was solemn and still. Prayers were repeated three times: once standing, once bowing from the waist, and once on the knees with forehead to the ground.
